CIVIL LIBERTIES CURTAILED
Besides propaganda, the government also passed legislation to limit opposition to the war and fight espionage, or spying to acquire government information. In 1917 they created the Espionage Act. Ads urged Americans to monitor thier fellow citizens. Americans began to form private groups to spy on their neighbors and coworkers, such as the American Protective League and the Boy Spies of America.
